HEO WOOK   (Korean Artist, Based in Seoul ) 

In 1993, during his studies in France, Heo Wook made an accidental discovery as damp fabric stretched tightly and dried across four tables. As the tables came into contact with one another, natural “fold lines” and boundaries emerged. This small formal discovery became an important point of departure for the development of his artistic practice.

Since then, Heo Wook has adopted <Cheom-Cheom (添添)>, meaning “Adding and Adding,” as a fundamental principle of his artistic practice. Through this concept, he has continuously connected and expanded lines and planes, structures and spaces. Moving beyond simple repetition or accumulation, he explores new formal possibilities through processes of adding and subtracting, transforming forms, and reconfiguring relationships.

The practice of <Cheomcheom>, which continues to the present, is not confined to the two-dimensional realm of the canvas. Moving fluidly across the boundaries between painting and object, space and architecture, Heo Wook creates new relationships and orders through the encounter and connection of diverse elements. This continual process of connection and expansion forms the essential foundation of his distinctive artistic language.

1993년 프랑스 유학 시절, 네 개의 테이블에 축축한 천이 팽팽하게 건조되는 과정에서 테이블이 서로 맞닿으며 자연스럽게 형성된 ‘접힘선’과 경계를 우연히 발견했다. 이 작은 조형적 발견은 이후 허욱의 작업 세계를 형성하는 중요한 출발점이 되었다.

이후 허욱은 <첨첨(添添)>, 즉 ‘더하고 더한다’는 개념을 작업의 핵심적인 조형 원리로 삼아, 선과 면, 구조와 공간을 지속적으로 연결하고 확장해왔다. 단순한 반복이나 축적을 넘어, 더하고 덜어내며 변형하고 관계를 재구성하는 과정을 통해 새로운 조형적 가능성을 탐구해왔다.

현재까지 이어온 <첨첨>의 작업 방식은 캔버스라는 평면적 영역에 머무르지 않는다. 회화와 오브제, 공간과 건축의 경계를 유연하게 넘나들며, 서로 다른 요소들이 만나고 연결되는 과정에서 새로운 관계와 질서를 생성한다. 이러한 지속적인 연결과 확장은 허욱만의 독자적인 조형 언어를 구축하는 핵심적인 기반이 되고 있다.
